His fumbling made her nervous. Her bravado leaked from her like air from a balloon. She needed to retreat and regroup. She had to get out of there fast. But not before she did what she came to do.

Waggling the white paper bag holding the economy-sized box of condoms, she inched toward the pharmacy door. “So, uh, these will be in my nightstand drawer. If you’re curious too.”

Seducing Mr. September

The Costa Nostra has nothing on the St. Blaise regional Medical Center Fundraising Committee when it comes to shaking people down for money. That’s the only explanation Pharmacist Mike Weber has for stripping down to nothing but a lab coat and a smile for a fundraising calendar.

Still, nothing could prepare him for frontal assault of Karen Horton. Cool as the most confident Don, she strolls into his store, grabs a jumbo box of condoms, and makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

Every night Mike Weber jogs past her house, shirtless, gorgeous, and absolutely oblivious. After years of watching life pass her by, Karen is ready to go for the gusto. Unfortunately, the gusto she wants is six-foot-five inches of shy guy.

But Karen is tired of waiting for the things she wants to come to her, so she launches a bold campaign guaranteed to make St. Blaise’s man of mystery take notice.

On impulse, she turned to face him, hoping to catch him unaware just once. But the small smile that curved his lips told her he knew exactly what she wanted. “Kiss me.”

The whispered command was all but swallowed by the sound of waves lapping at the sides of the boat, but Luca smiled as he obliged. He kissed her slow and sweet, exerting only enough pressure to let her know his feelings toward her were anything but gentlemanly, but proving he was the perfect specimen nonetheless when he broke the kiss seconds later.

“Do you like kissing me as much as you hoped?” He corralled a wayward strand of hair that clung to her damp lips and tucked it behind her ear. “Was it worth the trip, my Samantha?”

“Hello, my American girl-friend, Sam.”

She whirled in her seat but a rogue breeze tossed her hair into her eyes. Clawing it away, she zoomed in on the smiling man beside her table. This was no Cary Grant wannabe. No, Luca Camilleri was more of a George Clooney/Gerard Butler mix, without the gray hair or Scots burr, but with the smiling eyes and laugh lines fanning from the corners.

“Please tell me you are my good friend Sam and I’m not making a fool of myself in front of a beautiful woman.” His voice dropped to a hush. “Lie to me, if you must.”

Weekend Writing Warrior – 7/28/13

This week’s selection comes from the upcoming installment in my Hot Nights in St. Blaise series – August Awakening.

“I want you, Jenny Clyburn, even though you’re everything I don’t deserve.”

He carried her knotted fingers to his mouth and pressed a firm, damp kiss to the back of her hand. A fine webbing of blue-green veins mapped her translucent skin. “But I can’t help but think maybe we might be good for each other, too,” he said quietly. “I need to be in control to survive.” He trailed his fingertips over the curve of her jaw to the hollow of her collarbone. “You need someone to take the weight off your shoulders.” His body tensed, ready to spring the moment she gave herself over to the possibility.

August Awakening

The only things Jennifer Clyburn admits being addicted to are Caramello bars, shoe sales, and diet cherry Cokes from the Sonic. But there is one advantage to being ordered to attend alcohol awareness classes—she gets to spend a good hour each week ogling local bad boy, Alex Stephenson.

Once the crowned prince of St. Blaise, Alex grew up spoiled rotten and cocky as hell. The world was his oyster up until the day everything spun out of control. The red Corvette he got for his eighteenth birthday was a total loss. So was the sixteen-year-old girl in his passenger seat.

Ten years later, scarred and broken, Alex is back in St. Blaise leading the local recovery meetings and hoping to spare someone the guilt and grief he’ll carry with him the rest of his life.

Jenny Clyburn seems to be the kind of good-time girl he used to love, but he’s smart enough to recognize the demons that drive her. Her smart mouth is temptation incarnate, and her docile nature a siren song. Unable to resist, Alex takes it upon himself to teach her the best ways to master her impulses and surrender to that which she can’t control.

“Being afraid and living in fear are two different things.”

Her soft hand in his, he carried it to the collar of his shirt then slid her fingers under the fabric. The second her fingertips grazed the ugly raised scar on his shoulder, her lips parted. He held his breath, every nerve ending in his body screaming her name when she caressed the gnarled skin. Moths circled the porch light she’d left burning. Even the frantic fluttering of their wings wasn’t enough to stir the thick air. His toes braced against the stair riser, he exhaled a bit of his trepidation and attempted a reassuring smile.

“Afraid is a temporary thing, but fear never goes away.”

Weekend Writing Warrior & Contest!

Before I start, I just want to show off the fabulous 5 lip bite review MsRomanticReads gave the Hot Nights in St. Blaise series (So far!) I’ve been sharing bits of these with you all along and we’ll get back to St. Blaise next week.

For today I have another tasty tidbit from Rescue Me, the short story I wrote for the Smokin’ Hot Firemen anthology AVAILABLE NOW from Cleis Press.

The tag line for my story is: When a hot firefighter breaks down the wrong door, a smart woman drops her towel. 🙂

~~~~
“Gotcha. You’re tough as stale beef jerky.”
Her eyes widened then danced. She let loose a breathy laugh and turned toward the fridge, shaking her head in dismay. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to snap at you. It’s been a stressful night.”
“What with getting your door kicked in and being hoisted up and carried around stark naked?”
~~~~

Be sure to comment on this post and I will give away a copy (trade paperback) of Smokin’ Hot Firemen! I will draw one name from all comments posted before 11:59pm July 16, 2013. Thanks!

Weekend Writing Warrior – 7/7/13

Switching gears a little today…

This bit comes from Rescue Me, a short story I wrote for the upcoming Smokin’ Hot Firemen anthology ON SALE NOW from Cleis Press.

The tag line for my story is: When a hot firefighter breaks down the wrong door, a smart woman drops her towel. 🙂

~~~~
Her front door exploded.
One second it was intact, the next, shards of shrapnel from the wood frame showered the rug and pinged off the walls. Addi screeched, instinctively raising her arms to shield her face. The hulking figure of a man filled the open doorway. She had barely a moment to register the vision of a firefighter in full gear before he lunged through the door, barreling straight for her. She sucked in a sharp breath and the knot unraveled. Damp terry cloth hit the floor in a heap at her feet and his hard shoulder pressed into her stomach. He lifted her off the ground and tossed her over his back as if she were no more than a curl of ash.
“God, I forgot,” she panted. “I forgot how good this feels.”
The chant came out in a rolling purr. Her hair trailed down her back and slipped over her shoulders as she rolled her neck and began to rock slowly. Too slowly.
“Touch me,” she whispered. “I need to be touched.”
She didn’t have to ask him twice.
Roman Candles
Pediatrician Mario Debrizzio is a single woman’s dream come true. He’s successful and confident, owns a gorgeous old home that cries out for a family, and is as talented in the kitchen as he is in the bedroom.
But when he loses his cool on the job, Dr. Debrizzio finds himself front and center with SBRMC’s chief headshrinker. Dr. Sophie Bernard is more than pleasant to look at, but the last thing he wants is to let the woman who has already messed with his head poking around in there.
No amount of distance can keep Dr. Sophie Bernard safe from the memory of the scorching kiss she and Mario shared at the SBRMC Christmas party. The man was hot as a firecracker and every bit as dangerous. She was also married at the time…technically.
Long after her divorce is final, Sophie fights the attraction. But when Mario holds a flame to her fuse, her fear and frustration explodes into a passion that burns up the hot summer night.
Sophie shot out of the chair like a heat-seeking missile intent on seeking the heat only this particular man stirred in her. Her mouth found its target, perhaps with a little less grace than she would have liked, but she was happy to trade aplomb for accuracy. He caught her easily. Too easily. Logically, she knew women threw themselves at him all the time, but the tiniest bit of hesitation would have been appreciated.
His lips shifted against hers, dampening the spark of pique and stoking the red-hot need smoldering inside her. From the moment she first laid eyes on the tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome doctor, she wanted him. In that particular moment, when everything she claimed she didn’t need was there in her arms, she realized she had one goal in mind over the past six months: This.
Weekend Writing Warrior – 6/16/13
Today’s post comes for J is for Jaded– my contribution to Love Letters Volume 3: Wicked Whispers (Available TOMORROW from Carina Press).
****
“But that’s not my only dirty little secret.”
She whispered the last directly into his ear. A shiver ran rampant down his spine. The tip of her tongue grazed the barbell in his ear. He gathered her closer, one hand splayed wide and greedy across her back, the other on her ass. She flicked the barbell with her wicked tongue and his dick surged, stretching up to take the freedom offered by his unbuttoned fly.
He tipped his head toward her, encouraging her to take as much as she wanted. “Tell me more dirty secrets.”
 LoveLettersVol3
Verbal foreplay goes a long way in these four steamy stories in Love Letters Volume 3: Wicked Whispers.
I Is for Indecent by Christina Thacher
Annie Forrest doesn’t think flirtatious Stefan Cox is seriously interested in her—until he starts describing what it will be like when they strip away their inhibitions and their clothes. But do they have anything in common besides their gift for dirty talk?
J Is for Jaded by Maggie Wells
Voice actress Julie Poplin secretly thinks about rocker-turned-sound-engineer Vaughan Hatch when she needs to make passion leap from the page while narrating a steamy audio book. But their recording session takes a seductive turn when she accidentally speaks Vaughan’s name instead of the hero’s…
K Is for Kick-Start by Ginny Glass
Author Sophie Maddox has a bad case of writer’s block and a distractingly handsome editor clamoring for her newest sexy romance. She’s tempted by Oliver’s offer to use his place to write—and even more tempted to act out scenes when a typo reveals she’s been using him as inspiration.
L Is for Lessons by Emily Cale
When Chloe turns to her friend Bethany for help earning some extra cash, she’s shocked to discover that Bethany is a phone sex operator…and is intrigued by her offer to teach Chloe the ropes. But neither of them is prepared for the unexpected desire their lesson unleashes.
