Weekend Writing Warrior – 11/15/15

I messed up last week and forgot to set the time on my scheduled post, so I got bumped. 🙁 I posted later, but in case you missed it, I shared this little tidbit of news before I got started:

Big News! Remember the story I was sharing about the college football coach and the women’s basketball coach? It sold!!! FULL COURT PRESS (and two more in the Wolcott Warrior series) will be coming from Samhain Publishing in 2016-2017!

For now, here’s another taste of my current WIP, LOVE AND ROCKETS (Coastal Heat #3 – October 2016). This is the story of a rocket scientist who falls in love with a hardworking single mom and her brainy daughter.

“I did not, nor was I even thinking about touching your child in any way.”
“Maybe you’d be better off talking to a girl your own age.”

He stared down at her, trying to wrap his mind around the turn the evening had taken. While he and Darla had been a couple years apart in school and were never anything close to friends, he’d always been friendly when he saw her at The Pit. He said please and thank you, rarely asked for anything more demanding than an extra cup of sauce, and always over-tipped. In short, he had no Earthly idea why she took one look at him tonight and leaped directly to the worst possible conclusion. And he didn’t know what to say to her other than what he said every time he waved goodbye to her at the barbecue joint.

“I have to go. See you, Darla. Have a nice day.”

Hey, all! I’m working on LOVE AND ROCKETS (Coastal Heat #3 – October 2016). I’ll be sharing some bits from this one as I work on it. This is the story of a rocket scientist who falls in love with a hardworking single mom and her brainy daughter.

Jake turned in a slow circle, scanning the room with eyes far more attuned to darkness than light. He almost skipped right over her. Would have, if she weren’t momentarily spotlighted in a shaft of light courtesy of the swinging door that led to the kitchen.

She had the entire solar system laid out on an abandoned table near the door, a big orange and yellow papier-mâché Sun at the center, the precisely be-ringed Saturn in its place between Jupiter and Uranus.

And she was a girl. A tall, slender girl with dark hair and the pale skin of a bookworm. He was always really bad at pinpointing ages, but if she’d made that replica of Saturn, as she claimed, she was most likely at the younger end of the middle school spectrum. Jake watched as she pulled a small grayish-brown ball out of her pocket and placed it on the very edge of the table.

Pluto.

He’d just proposed marriage to a fellow Pluto fan.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 10/18/15

Hey, all! I’m working on LOVE AND ROCKETS (Coastal Heat #3 – October 2016). I’ll be sharing some bits from this one as I work on it. Still without our glasses, our hero spots a woman hanging back in the shadows of the dim hotel ballroom.

Knowing he’d blown any chance of appearing suave or even mildly cool in front of the woman on the other side of the round table, he snatched up the model of Saturn and dropped onto a knee.

Holding the ringed planet out in front of him like an offering, he peered at the black-clad figure hanging back in the shadows. “I know you said you wanted at least a full carat, Sweetheart, but this one has almost twice the mass of the whole Earth.”

His spur of the moment proposal was met with a surprisingly girlish giggle. Jake didn’t let that stop him. “The core is probably iron and nickel, but I can promise you, you’ll never want for ammonia.”

Again, the woman giggled. She sounded young. Too young for him. Disappointment flared inside him but immediately subsided.

“I gave birth to two doctors and neither of you can give me what I really want,” his mother said, heaving a wistful sigh.
Brian and Jake groaned in unison, but unaccustomed to the old refrain, Jake’s future sister-in-law stepped right into the set-up. “What’s that?” Brooke asked, her smile solicitous.
“Valium,” all three Dalton men answered in unison.
While Jake shared a grin with his dad and brother, his mom shot them the death glare. Within seconds, his father caught a staggering blow from her elbow with his ribs. Andrew Dalton might have settled for a simple Master’s degree rather than the Doctorates his sons had earned in what he liked to term their ‘pipe dream’ fields, but the man was anything but a fool. When Jake was sixteen and embarking on his first relationship that looked like it would last longer than the seven minutes of heaven he’d experienced in Molly Watkins’ coat closet, his dad had taken him aside and offered one bit of sage advice.
Don’t waste your breath arguing with a woman you love, son. You’re gonna give in to her anyway, no sense in working up a sweat.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 10/4/15

Hey, gang! Thanks for celebrating the release of Going Deep with me last month. I’m so excited about this series. I just finished copy edits on FLIP THIS LOVE (Coastal Heat #2 – April 2016) and now I’m working on LOVE AND ROCKETS (Coastal Heat #3 – October 2016). I’m going to be sharing some bits from this one as I work on it. Ready? Here we go!

“Stop squinting. You look like you’re constipated.”
Jake Dalton went straight from squint to grimace as his mother’s sharp elbow found the soft spot between his sixth and seventh ribs. Instead of protesting, Jake simply covered his bruised side with his hand and leaned down to speak directly into his mother’s ear. “I wouldn’t have to squint if you’d let me wear my glasses. It’s just a little tape.”
Julia Dalton huffed an impatient breath but didn’t bother sparing him a glance. “There are dozens of eligible young women here, Jacob.” She scanned the Starlight ballroom with a practiced eye, muttering almost to herself as she took in every tiny detail. “I’ll be damned if I let my handsome boy go walking around like some kind of Poindexter all night.”

“I didn’t write that crap.” Her nails sliced the tender skin of her palm, but she didn’t care. She stepped closer to the door, intent on making him believe. “I wrote about the tadpoles you tried to grow in your Grandma’s birdbath. Your obsession with composition notebooks. You lettered in track because you liked the sound of your own breathing.”

The door rattled in its frame, as if he’d trusted his entire weight to it.

“I wrote about your mom and those crazy chocolate oatmeal cookies she used to bring when she was homeroom mother, and I did use the live oak thing because I liked it. The answer suited you,” she continued, momentum carrying her. “But I never used the word ‘hunky’, I swear.”

Like everyone else on the Gulf Coast, she’d been waiting and watching, wondering what he’d do next.

Ignoring her seafood gaffe, she switched tactics. “Your parents must be glad to have you back.”

His smile spread slowly. “You act like I’ve been gone the whole time. I did come home for Christmases, you know.”

“I just meant—”

“I spent a few weeks gathering tar balls on the beach after the spill.”

He spoke casually, but the words swirled with undercurrent. Another flash fire of embarrassment sucked the moisture from her mouth as he wrapped long fingers around his glass, sending beads of condensation scurrying.

Brooke’s pink tongue darted out to wet her lips. She looked up and caught him staring at her mouth, mesmerized. Turning his attention to the bottle in his hand, he shoved the white-hot shaft of desire down deep and focused on the laws of thermodynamics instead. Adiabatic cooling. A sudden change in temperature caused the water vapor trapped in the sparkling wine’s fizzing bubbles to condense. Vapor rose from the lip of the bottle, curling like smoke on the cool spring breeze.

“You should be embarrassed,” he chided.

“Consider me mortified.”

Brooke’s throaty whisper enveloped him. Unwilling to risk releasing the stream of gibberish from his head, he clamped his mouth shut and offered her the champagne.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 9/6/15

Hey gang! Guess what? It’s release month for Going Deep!

It sure has been a long time coming. I opened the original doc on 7/13/13. As of 9/15/15, it will be out in the world. To celebrate, I’ll be sharing new excerpts from the finished product!

“As a rule, it’s good form to compliment the woman to whom you are speaking.”

To his credit, Brian recovered quickly. His eyes narrowed. Cocking his head, he studied her like she was one of his elusive microorganisms swimming under a microscope. “I don’t bother much with rules. It’s too hard to remember them all.”

“Sad to see your cognitive skills haven’t improved.”

His smile turned rakish. She’d be damned if his eyes didn’t twinkle when he faced her dead-on. “No, but I’m still an ace when it comes to chemistry.”

Weekend Writing Warrior – 8/30/15

Here’s another excerpt from FLIP THIS LOVE – coming April 2016 from Kensington/Lyrical Press!

Finally, the gravity of his confession and her silence closed in around them. Laney drew a deep breath, wishing some of his boldness had somehow rubbed off on her in all those times they’d rubbed against each other. But it hadn’t. So she’d do what she’d been doing her whole life—plunge ahead without a clue about what she’d do next if she failed. After all, it hadn’t killed her thus far.

Sliding her hand down his arm, she laced her fingers through his and held on tight. “Come on, big guy.”

He glanced down at their joined hands as she tugged him away from the counter. “Where are we going?”

“Next stop on the nickel tour,” she answered.
