Weekend Writing Warrior – 6/14/15

More from my current WIP, Play Dates, the first book in what I hope will be a series featuring some hot single dads and the women who capture their hearts!

“I’d forgotten how soft a woman’s skin is,” he whispered, almost to himself. “You smell so good. Fresh and flowery, not like socks, gummy candy and sour milk.”

A laugh escaped her before she could stop it. “Thank you.”

He winced, then pushed himself into a sitting position as the cab started to slow. Ever the gentleman, he pulled her up, then made a valiant effort to erase the evidence of their backseat tumble by tugging ineffectually at her skirt, then taking a brusque swipe at the front of her blouse. She jerked at the ungainly contact and he yanked his hand away as if he’d been scalded.

“Wow. I just…” He pressed the heel of his hand to one eyebrow then blew out a breath. “You have no idea how close you just came to getting a spit bath.”

“I’ll see you home.”

Though the words drifted past her ear on a low, throat whisper, she almost jumped out of her skin. His hand slid down to her hip to hold her close as he reached past her to open the restaurant door.

Wetting her lips, she glanced over her shoulder as she stepped out in to the crisp, clean night air. “I was hoping you would.”

“Did you drive?”

She wanted to do a little wiggle dance just to see if she could work his hand a bit lower, but resisted the temptation. They’d get there soon enough. This was going to happen, and damn, it would be good.

“I took a cab.”

“No kid talk.” He grimaced when he saw her flinch just the slightest bit. “You have no idea how long it’s been since I’ve had an adult night out. Even longer since I’ve had one with a woman.” Her eyebrows did the whole reach for the sky thing before he realized what he’d just said. “I mean, not that way. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, right?” He added the line with a nervous chuckle, and at last she cracked a smile.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 5/17/15

I’m so excited! This week I am re-releasing my first Maggie Wells book – Seducing Steve. My old friend Steve has been re-edited and re-covered, but he’s still as hot as ever! Check him out:

“Don’t put this in one of your books, please…I can do better.”

She smiled and touched her finger to his mouth. Steve sucked the tip of her finger into his mouth, laving her with his tongue. “Too late,” she whispered. “Book three.”

“Huh?”

She snuggled into the crook of his neck and sighed. “Everything from book three on was all you.”

Erotic romance novelist Sara Wright is searching for passion that leaps from the page, and she thinks the answer might be right under her nose. For eight years, Sara has been harboring a secret lust for her best friend and sometimes muse, Steve Larson.

Steve has loved Sara since the day he met her, but has long since resigned himself to being firmly in the friend zone. That is, until Sara confesses she’s been using her fantasies about him as inspiration for the heroes in her novels.

Determined to be the man to give her what she wants, he takes a page from Sara’s books and plots his every move to make her his. But he isn’t quite like the guys she writes about, and, in truth, he isn’t sure he wants to be. With each encounter, he ups the sexual stakes, but fears he’s giving her the wrong impression of who he is and exactly what he wants.

Her heart.

Weekend Writing Warrior – 5/10/15, cover reveal, and FREEBIE!

Hi gang! Remember the book I wrote about the hotshot reporter and the even hotter marine biologist guy? Well, Going Deep will be hitting the e-book shelves on September 15, 2015 and I got gorgeous new cover art! To celebrate, I’m sharing 8 lines from Brooke and Brian’s story this week. Anyone up for a little dancing in the moonlight?

“Can you sing?”

“Not on a bet.”

“Whistle?”

Raising one eyebrow, he stepped into her space, forcing her to follow him into the smooth glide of a waltz. “Do you need me to hail you a cab?”

“I haven’t actually waltzed since the junior high cotillion,” she murmured, nostalgia curving her lips. “Do you hum?”

“I’ve been humming every second since I saw you tonight.”

Here’s the gorgeous artwork from Kensington/Lyrical Press sent this week:

And here’s the scoop on this story:

Going Deep

To the heart of the story.

Brooke Hastings almost won a Pulitzer Prize for her hard-hitting reportage. Now she’s sitting on the story of a lifetime and wants to prove she’s not a one-hit-wonder. But in order to get the world to take notice, she’ll need the help of the one person she loves to hate—Brian Dalton.

Brian Dalton stumbled into celebrity when he landed a show on the Earth Channel. But the hunky marine biologist never forgot the serious, studious boy who left Mobile a decade before. Now back in Alabama, he’s looking for the quiet life he always wanted and hoping for a chance with the girl he always loved. When Brooke asks him to help expose some of the lingering effects of the Gulf oil disaster, Brian jumps at the chance to help preserve the place both call home…

Weekend Writing Warrior – 5/3/15

Before I get to my work in progress, I just want to share a little news with you, my Warrior pals…

I have signed with agent Sara Megibow! I subbed Full Court Press, the battle of the sexes story I shared with you over the past few months, and she offered representation! We’re all official now, so I wanted to share it with you all, since you’ve been with that story from the start! Thank you all for your feedback!

Okay, now back to Play Dates! These are eight more lines from my new contemporary romance about a woman whose little niece helps her snag the man of her dreams. Our heroine, Monica, is calling to confirm her date with hot Saturdaddy, Colm Cleary.

****

“So this is a yes,” he said briskly. “I’m taking this as a yes, because you aren’t texting.”

“It’s a yes.”

Mel grabbed her arm and gave it a jiggle-squeeze of excitement. “He even sounds hot.”

She shot Mel a warning glance, but luckily there was a clatter and commotion on the other end of the line. After a bit of fumbling, Colm asked, “I’m sorry, did you say something?”

“Nothing…just, uh, it’s me and yes.”

“God, you’re a horrible tramp.” With the speed and agility Monica always forgot Mellow Mel possessed, her sister launched herself from the chair and landed on the couch beside her, bouncing them both. “Call him now, I want to hear what he sounds like.”
Monica rolled her eyes, but a flush of pleasure warmed her cheeks as the backlit screen sprung to life. “Okay, but you have to swear you won’t say anything. Just let me have my way with him this once, and I promise I will never let your daughter pimp me out again.”

“Hush. Don’t say such things about my baby.”

Weekend Writing Warrior – 4/19/15

Here are eight more from  my work in progress, Play Dates. It’s a contemporary romance about a woman whose little niece helps her snag the man of her dreams. Monica justifies using her niece as hunk bait.

****

“You’re going to do it, aren’t you?”
She jerked her head up to find Melody giving her the slitty-eyed stare. “What?”
“You’re going to go out with him and you’re going to let that poor man go on believing that my baby is yours.”

The sheer dramatics had Monica rolling her eyes. “Why is it you never added theater to your artsy-fartsy repertoire?”

“Stage fright,” Mel answered without missing beat.

“Listen, I’m just going to have dinner with him. How often does a girl like me have a shot at a hunk like that?”

“You’re going to have to tell him,” Melody said, fixed her with a disconcerting stare.

Somehow, Monica always managed to underestimate the amount of steel in her free-spirited sister’s spine. Mel seldom showed that side of her personality. She preferred to go through life as if the whole world were populated with rainbow-colored unicorns. Even in the weekly yoga class they took together, Melody soaked up the plinky new age music and threw herself into the deep breathing exercises and Oms. Monica usually spent most of the relaxation portion of the class figuring out subtle ways to throw a few Pilates moves in to save herself the time of taking another class. It was hard to believe that a woman clad in faded yoga pants, a tie-dyed Peace Frogs T-shirt, and a pair of fuzzy socks she claimed were infused with shea butter or aloe or some such nonsense, kept that stare stashed in her arsenal.

“Can I wait until after?”

“You know, you have to pick your battles,” he said with a rueful shake of his head. “I fought it to start, but then you realize it just doesn’t matter. I mean, girls play with trucks and Legos and stuff, right?”

“Was that supposed to somehow sound less sexist?”

He had the good grace to wince. “In my head it sounded better.” Rocking back on his heels, he shot her a sidelong glance and dropped his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “I haven’t done this in a while.”
