Weekend Writing Warrior – 10/25/15

Hey, all! I’m working on LOVE AND ROCKETS (Coastal Heat #3 – October 2016). I’ll be sharing some bits from this one as I work on it. This is the story of a rocket scientist who falls in love with a hardworking single mom and her brainy daughter.

Jake turned in a slow circle, scanning the room with eyes far more attuned to darkness than light. He almost skipped right over her. Would have, if she weren’t momentarily spotlighted in a shaft of light courtesy of the swinging door that led to the kitchen.

She had the entire solar system laid out on an abandoned table near the door, a big orange and yellow papier-mâché Sun at the center, the precisely be-ringed Saturn in its place between Jupiter and Uranus.

And she was a girl. A tall, slender girl with dark hair and the pale skin of a bookworm. He was always really bad at pinpointing ages, but if she’d made that replica of Saturn, as she claimed, she was most likely at the younger end of the middle school spectrum. Jake watched as she pulled a small grayish-brown ball out of her pocket and placed it on the very edge of the table.

Pluto.

He’d just proposed marriage to a fellow Pluto fan.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to check out all of this weekend’s Weekend Writing Warrior posts!

Going Deep – To the heart of the story.

Making Headlines

Brooke Hastings almost won a Pulitzer Prize for her hard-hitting reportage. Now she’s sitting on the story of a lifetime and wants to prove she’s not a one-hit-wonder. But in order to get the world to take notice, she’ll need the help of the one person she loves to hate—Brian Dalton.

Brian Dalton stumbled into celebrity when he landed a show on the Earth Channel. But the hunky marine biologist never forgot the serious, studious boy who left Mobile a decade before. Now back in Alabama, he’s looking for the quiet life he always wanted and hoping for a chance with the girl he always loved. When Brooke asks him to help expose some of the lingering effects of the Gulf oil disaster, Brian jumps at the chance to help preserve the place both call home…

  1. I love the last line and the detail as he’s watching her is spot on. I felt right there 🙂 Cant wait to follow this story along

  2. This is such a cute scene. Love the way we meet this girl through Jake’s eyes, and she’s a fellow Pluto fan! Woot! 😀 Great job!

  3. Aww, you had me at rocket scientist + hard-working single mom. The scene is great. Sucks you right in.

  4. The rocket scientist reminds me of a friend here in Tucson, a multi-Rita award winning author, whose first husband was a rocket scientist. Keep in mind that he was her ex–but she said disparagingly that she was waaay smarter than him.
